The mission of the 47th Medical Group at Laughlin Air Force Base is to support the 47th Flying Training Wing’s medical, dental and aeromedical needs in support of Laughlin’s Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training mission. The medical group is responsible for the health care of more than 3,400 Department of Defense (DoD) beneficiaries and ensuring the medical readiness mission for wartime and worldwide contingencies.

Job summary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: ???????This position involves work performing as a generalist in the areas of chemistry, serology, hematology, urinalysis, phlebotomy, front desk reception, and microbiology at Kenner Army Health Clinic. The hours are 0700-1600, Monday - Friday.

Major duties

Conducts a variety of diagnostic tests (categorized as routine though STAT in priority) using procedures ranging from waived testing to highly complex. Test results support the diagnosis, care and treatment services provided by direct health care providers from various general medical and surgical specialties to include providers outside of the system. Performs pin worm preparations, occult blood screens, KOH, wet preps and post vasectomy semen analysis. Conducts a variety of serological tests to include Serum Beta Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (BHCG), Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) and Mono-spot. Performs routine operator maintenance on complex clinical instrumentation and equipment, include first line troubleshooting procedures to correct malfunctions. Performs quality control testing, calibrations, verifications and evaluations to verify that diagnostic analyzers are functioning within established parameters. Prepares a variety of laboratory specimens for shipment. Receives specimens from various sections within the clinic. Prepares specimens for shipment to include spinning, separating and freezing. Performs a variety of administrative functions related to laboratory operations. Receives telephone calls, patients, and visitors into the laboratory.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Assisting with the reviewing laboratory Standard Operating Procedures; 2) Preparing laboratory for Biennial CAP Inspection utilizing the College of American Pathology (CAP) Checklists; 3) Utilize tools such as Levey-Jennings Charts to generate daily/monthly Quality Control reports; and 4) Enter specimen information and test data into the laboratory information management system. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). AND Certificate: This position has a selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment. Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is required.
