Job summary

This a National Guard Title 5 Excepted Service Position. This position is an Indefinite GS-0081-08 FIRE PROTECTION SPECIALIST (TITLE 5), Position Description Number T5525000 and is part of the MO 131st Bomb Wing. This is a bargaining position. SEE NOTES UNDER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT.

Major duties

Directs, plans, and organizes Fire Emergency Services activities. Plans, organizes, and provides fire prevention training to ANG personnel at the installation. Reviews new regulations or procedures and disseminates information assuring that such procedures are implemented. Represents the Fire Protection program with a variety of unit and functional area organizations. Establishes, develops, and maintains effective working relationships with other staff officials, and municipal fire departments. Evaluates fire departments with which agreements exist to ensure their capability to provide firefighting assistance. Participates in special projects and initiatives and performs special assignments. Identifies the need for special projects and initiates milestones and goals. Evaluates reports by analyzing facts and performing appropriate research and prepares detailed responses. Determines appropriate recommendations for unresolved or questionable problems and performs follow-up. Manages the Hazard Assessment Inspection Program, Public Fire Prevention and Education Program, Fire Protection Engineering, and Extinguisher Maintenance Program. Implements internal controls, self-inspection, and audit compliance. Coordinates with the Base Civil Engineer and other supervisors in the development and implementation of policies. Prepares and executes inspection and training duties to ensure the organization meets the training requirements provided by the Department of the Air Force. Develops recommendations for the Base Civil Engineer on the level and mixture of resources needed to ensure an effective and efficient program. Develops and maintains a variety of documentation such as fire prevention inspection schedules and facilities jackets on assigned facilities. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualification

GS-08 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must possess at least 18 months experience, education, or training in one or more of the following areas: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade. (2) Rescue operations. (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. (4) Operation of fire communications equipment. (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents. (6) Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention (7) Firefighting and fire prevention theory and techniques; (8) Fixed and mobile firefighting equipment operation. (9) Planning, directing, or carrying out fire protection and prevention programs and operations and/or (10) Performing emergency medical services. The incumbent of this position must be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification system as Fire Officer III (includes Fire Officer I, II), Fire Instructor III (includes Fire Instructor I, II), Fire Inspector II (includes Fire Inspector I), HAZMAT Incident Commander (includes Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations), Airport Fire Fighter (includes Firefighter I, II).
