Job Summary:
The Equipment Superintendent is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient management of construction equipment on site from mobilization through demobilization. This role supervises and directs operations within the equipment department, including craft activities and subordinate supervisors, ensuring equipment is available, properly inspected, maintained, fueled, and safe to operate. Additionally, the superintendent ensures all equipment operations align with project requirements, health, safety, and environmental objectives, as well as Bechtel core processes, while maintaining schedules, budgets, and performing general supervisory shop functions. #LI-BH1
Major Responsibilities:
- Inspect construction equipment upon arrival, during use, and prior to demobilization; complete required inbound/outbound inspection reports with documentation of damage/deficiencies and attachment inventories.
- Verify receipt, tracking, and availability of equipment operation and parts manuals; ensure manuals are complete and accessible to equipment personnel.
- Identify, schedule, and document preventive maintenance inspections and lubrication requirements.
- Enforce the project safety program (e.g., Zero Accident Philosophy) and ensure equipment operation complies with OSHA, project HS&E requirements, CORE processes, and applicable SWPPs.
- Support construction supervision to ensure equipment is used in accordance with project specifications and work plans.
- Coordinate equipment supply and allocation in alignment with field execution schedules and discipline work plans.
- Analyze workforce, material, and equipment needs to support short-term and look-ahead planning.
- Coordinate with Equipment Managers, construction supervision, maintenance teams, and vendors to ensure equipment availability and timely response to issues.
- Oversee field maintenance activities to minimize downtime; troubleshoot and help direct repairs or escalate issues as needed.
- Maintain accurate equipment records, inspection documentation, inventories, and supporting information (e.g., costs, utilization trends, and maintenance history) in accordance with project requirements.
- Assist with preparation of equipment-related reports, forecasts, and inventory information for project leadership.
- Ensure subcontractor and vendor equipment activities comply with contractual requirements and project standards.
- Order and manage consumables (e.g., filters, oil, grease, DEF, fuel) as required to support equipment operations.
- Prepare and maintain tool lists; ensure craft teams have the required tools to perform work safely and productively.
- Coordinate equipment fueling activities.
- Demonstrate leadership in a team-based construction environment; communicate effectively and maintain strong customer and stakeholder relationships.
- Ensure assigned personnel are qualified for their tasks and follow applicable standards, requirements, and safe work practices.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant experience or 9-12 years of relevant work experience
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience coordinating construction equipment operations, utilization, and maintenance in an industrial or heavy civil environment.
- Working knowledge of equipment inspection practices, preventive maintenance programs, and field troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of OSHA requirements and strong commitment to safe work practices.
- Ability to read and interpret work plans, schedules, and equipment documentation (manuals, work orders, inspection forms).
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate records and produce reports/forecasts.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with supervision, craft, maintenance, and vendors.
- Knowledge of the use of subcontracts, and the contractor and subcontractor’s responsibilities contained in subcontract documents.'
- Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
- Demonstrated leadership in a team-based environment.
- Experience operating in high-utilization construction environments where equipment availability, preventative maintenance, and rapid repair coordination are critical to maintaining construction schedules is also preferred.
- Experience managing construction equipment fleets and associated maintenance programs
- Familiarity with major OEM equipment manufacturers (e.g., CAT, Komatsu, JLG, Genie, etc.)
- Working knowledge of crane operations and lifting equipment
- Experience utilizing fleet management or equipment tracking systems
- Prior experience supporting large-scale construction projects with multiple disciplines and high equipment volumes.
- Experience working with subcontractor and vendor equipment in accordance with contract requirements.
- AEMP Equipment Management Specialist (EMS) or Certified Equipment Manager (CEM) certification preferred.
- Work is primarily performed in an active construction site environment; ability to walk job sites and work around heavy equipment is required.
- May require extended hours, shift work, and/or weekend work to support construction schedules.
- Must be able to comply with site access requirements and project safety policies.
